In the 1980 Nigeria finally won his first African Nations Cup, being the host of the competition. Four years later the African Nations Cup was organized by Côte d'Ivoire and Nigeria joined the final against Cameroon defeating Egypt in the semifinals. The final was decided by penalties and Cameroon won the cup.
In the 1988 Nigeria did a great performance at the African Nations Cup but again the Nigerian lost the final against Cameroon. Cameroon won 3 of the 5 African titles by defeating Nigeria (1984, 1988, 2000) and that created an intense rivalry between both nations. Nigeria will win the African Cup again in 1994 and 2013.
