Japan National Football Team retro shirt
In the 1950s Japan national team post-war's debut was in the first Asian Games edition in 1951.
In this competition held in India the Football tournament consisted of six Asian teams: Afghanistan, Burma, India, Indonesia, Iran, and Japan.
The games lasted only 60 minutes and for example in the semifinal between Iran and Japan, being the game goalless after the over-time they decided to replay the game on a next day. In the replay match Iran defeated Japan 3-2.
Then Japan played in qualifiers for 1954 FIFA World Cup and here started the intense rivalry with South Korea.
Indeed South Korea qualified after two matches: a draw in the first and a winning in the second.
The first significant appearance on the world stage for Japan will be at 1964 Olympic Games and the first success in the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, where they won the bronze medal.
