What a campaign of Schalke 04 1971/72. A very good result in the final table of the Bundesliga, as a runner-up, was crowned with the win of the DFB-Cup. But the good results were put aside by the Bundesliga-scandal, were many players of Schalke were involved. On the way to the cup-final, they managed to beat huge favorites like Borussia Mönchengladbach and the 1.FC Köln with many stars and national players.

The FC Schalke 04 club icon, Klaus Fischer, famous for his unique overhead kicks, scored respectable 29 goals. Unfortunately he was playing in the same era as the bomber of the nation (Gerd Müller), who scored in the same campaign unmatched 40 goals in 34 games. As a result the goal scorer of FC Schalke had to get used to finish in the second spot of the scoring list. However he got the “Torjägerkanone” four years later in 1976 and is to this day the player with the second most goals in the Bundesliga.
